I don´t remember when and how I found “Take The Pills” music blog. But since I discovered that it is running by Gustavo from Fortaleza, CE, northeast Brazil I was a number one Take The Pills fan.
Marco Stecz and me are into the music since 80´s and until now never saw someone that show so knowhow like Gustavo. It is impressed!
I visit his blog daily looking for the best bands that are rising, the best bands that break up, the best alternative Brazilian bands, all the best.

Take a tour – Take The Pills.

INTRO

What reason takes an American boy starts a cdr alternative label in so far Nebraska putting out more than 300 bands in less than 2 years? Really I know the answer because what roll Christopher of Series Two Records is the same reason that move me into the music life: love and obstination.

Christopher is a boy that’s himself personality and opinion. He declared opened his choice to Barack Obama in US recently national election. He release bands that nobody heard about in the world. He does everything (cdr’s, cover art, distribuition, marketing, sell). He is always want make more, more, more….

Christopher, I understand you because I am like you with a detail: you are better than me. It is great!

INTRO

Cadyman Club are 3 friends playing with the same feeling and music taste. Vlad and Hill formers Loaded, Swamps (remember them waering big dark glass) and Tobyone. Giba arrived in Curitiba from so far Brasília to work like journalist/advertising professional. In Brasília played with bands pospunk style but he wasn’t happy. In Curitiba met Vlad and Hill and currently are playing these re-covers just for fun and just for love.

Stecz told me about them the last week. We fit them on our schedule and now our listeners can know better these guys that has part of hystorical 90’s Curitiba scene.

It was almost 5 years that I didn’t see Hill and Vlad. I remember us in the James Bar (early days!!!) always together in the shows, drinks and other good moments. We were happy and didn’t know about it!

IN JULY: UV MINIFESTIVAL WITH STARS IN COMA (Sweden). The next 25/feb we are announcing the official bands list that will play in event. It is a MINIFest boys and not like Lolapalooza or Glastonbury. Hey, we are alternates, yellow man!

INTRO

I knew Trilöbit in barbecue in Mel (Subburbia drummer)’s apartment a one year ago. As soon I saw them it comes in mind those guys are from anoter galaxy. First appear a monkey called Urkö arriving directly from monkeys planet (does someone remember the cult 70’s tv monkeys series?). The second sight was a fake Mexican unployed named Animau Gönzalez speaking a portunhol (across between language portuguese/Spanish) very loud. The third man more knowed like Nösferatus was a strong smelling because it was 2 weeks without take a shower – and he was trying to explain because in planet that they lives doesn’t have water and he was so happy that is our planet there are so much rivers and mointains.

They are Trilöbit. A band from Londrina, southern Brazil that is shaking the eletrorock brazilian scene. Their sound has like bent market Hot Chip, Pop Will Eat Itself, Renegade Soundwave and Buthole Surfers. They are putting out the “Tutorial CD”. Meanwhile they are on the road playing in São Paulo, Curitiba, Sorocaba, Goiânia e another underground places.

ABOUT THE NAME
I met The Name from my friend Emil (Subburbia) that gave an ep-demo cd from them a few months ago. To tell the truth I am not impressed when I listened it in the first time but listening it more times in my fucking car i can tell you that The Name is a fantastic band. They reminded a lot THE MINUTEMEN, NO MEANS NO and (of course) ORANGE JUICE (Postcard era). But if you have the chance to see them live you will change the idea about 80’s/90’s style. I can percept something like Joy Division meeting Bravery or The Name meeting The Name. I told this words because they have a self style even as darkness powerpop influences.

I saw them live at Wonka Bar before the Último Volume interview and minipocketshow studio. Really man!!!!!! I wish you were there. Energy, chemical, powerful on stage. I never saw a brazilian band like them since Vzyadoq Moe, Fellini and recently Fotograma. OK you are thinking: - The Name is the currently fave Neri’s band – and I answer: - they are my currently fave band.

LIQUID LIQUID (US)
“Optimo”
www.myspace.com/liquidliquidmusic

Liquid Liquid was a New York City post-punk band that was active from 1980 to 1983. Their track "Cavern", from the Optimo EP, recorded by Don Hunerberg was sampled (actually played by the Sugar Hill house band) on Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel's "White Lines (Don't Do It)". Since the band’s inception in 1980, the sounds of Liquid Liquid have haunted the clubs. The original records were pressed in very limited quantities on the 99 label, and can now fetch high prices. Though the pressings were small the impact the music has made is lasting and far reaching. The first three EPs, plus live material, were reissued in 1997 by Grand Royal (US) and Mo' Wax (UK). Their music was essentially groove based, influenced by the many different sources, funk, dub reggae of the 1970s, and primarily punk in its do it yourself garage approach. Scott Hartley, Richard McGuire, Salvatore Principato and Dennis Young were the band members. Dennis Young is still active and producing music, and has been remixed by Hot Chip and Tussle. Richard McGuire is well-established graphic designer with frequent contributions to both The New Yorker magazine, and The New York Times Book Review. Salvatore Principato is active in various electronic music recording projects, as well as DJ'ing professionally around the world.

Orange Juice - band history. (taken from 'The Rough Guide To Rock')
From the tear-stained faces that greeted the announcement of their dissolution at London's Brixton Academy on January 19, 1985, it was clear that Orange Juice had commanded a rare devotion. Beginning as the punk-inspired Nu-Sonics in late 1976, the band which eventually comprised Edwyn Collins (guitar/vocals), James Kirk (guitar), Steven Daly (drums) and David McClymont (bass) became Orange Juice in early 1979, adopting the name and a collectively fey demeanour as a reaction against the machismo into which punk had degenerated. It was still as a Nu-Sonic, though, that Collins befriended a young botany student by the name of Alan Horne, whose enthusiasm for the band was not only to keep them together through the troubled times of their rebirth as Orange Juice, but also to provide them with an outlet for the their music through the founding of the Postcard Records label.
Initial releases on the new Glaswegian label proved to be a shared triumph of vision over musical ability and financial resources. "Falling and Laughing" recorded for under £100, and with an initial pressing of 1000, reaped immediate critical acclaim, as too did the subsequent singles "Blueboy", "Simply Thrilled Honey" and "Poor Old Soul". However, although Postcard was eventually to establish itself an impressive roster of acts that included Aztec Camera, Josef K and The Go-Betweens, the label imploded with the loss of Orange Juice to Polydor in 1981.
It was an advance from Polydor which enabled them to complete the recording of their debut You Can't Hide Your Love Forever (1982), an album which for many was a negation of the purity of vision which had characterized the band's previous output and the whole Postcard ethos. In retrospect it retains an endearing naivety, exemplified by a rather ambitious rendition of Al Green's "L.O.V.E. Love" Notably, though, the album featured guitar work from Malcolm Ross (ex Josef K), whose inclusion into the band's line-up was to force a split with Kirk and Daly (who left to form the less-than- successful Memphis). Daly was replaced by Zimbabwean refugee Zeke Manyika, an altogether more accomplished player but one whose presence closed the door on all foreign touring options because of his status as an illegal immigrant.
Presumably this was considered a price worth paying as Manyika's rhythmic mastery undoubtedly enabled Collins to better realize his funk/pop aspirations. Certainly, Rip it Up (1982) proved an altogether more purposeful affair, despite its odd shifts of pace, veering from the uplifting African-influenced "Hokoyo" to Velvets-inspired ballads such as "Louise Louise". It also delivered the band's one UK Top 10 single, by way of the title track, a catchy slice of pure-pop tomfoolery built around an elastic toe-tapping bassline.
Yet the album itself failed to better the chart placing attained by its predecessor, and when subsequent singles failed to chart either, Polydor's commitment to the band began to waver. Indeed, relations between Collins in particular and Polydor were fast reaching an impasse, and to make matters worse the group fragmented again in mid-1983, with McClymont and Ross decamping in pursuit of their own projects (Ross eventually surfacing in Aztec Camera) although not before the recording of a six-track mini-album with reggae producer Dennis Bovell. Though brief, Texas Fever (1984) was far from insubstantial, with Bovell's dubby production showcasing to great effect the fast-maturing songwriting talents of Collins and the confident musicianship of the band.
Down but not quite out, Collins fulfilled touring commitments with a makeshift band before returning to the studio to record The Orange Juice (1984), a dark, brooding classic in which his songwriting was by turns wry, downbeat and disarmingly autobiographical - its most upbeat number proclaiming that he was 'going through a lean period'. Polydor not surprisingly showed little interest in the work, and when the two singles "What Presence" and "Lean Period" stalled, the label acted to terminate Collins's contract. Curiously, Manyika was retained as a solo artist, whereupon he gained a degree of critical favour but little in the way of commercial success. Edwyn Collins, meantime, pursued a solo career which has at last blossomed into chart success.

Somewhere between the Graveyard and the Ballroom, in a place defined by late seventies industrial Manchester and early eighties New York sunsets, at a point between the old and the new, they found their feet. Formed during the ampthetamine-crazed soundwave that was Punk UK 1978, taking in influences from teutonic technotronicers Kraftwerk, powered by Wire and holding court in George Clinton's Funkadelic house of Parliament, A Certain Ratio took to the stage.

Intense and diverse, and originally drummerless, they released their debut single in 1979 - "All Night Party/The Thin Boys" through Factory Records, a label set up by Rob Gretton, Alan Erasmus, and Anthony (H) Wilson. A highly prophetic choice of title, as this was indeed the beginning of one long all-nighter for both parties. Donald Johnson joined as drummer after its release, completing the original line up with Simon Topping, Jez Kerr, Pete Terrell and Martin Moscrop. The band returned to the studio and completed a series of gigs around the country with labelmates Joy Division during late '79 and early 1980. Factory released the debut album "The Graveyard and the Ballroom", a limited edition cassette-only release that contained both studio demos and live tracks.

In late 1980, the story switches from post-punk Manchester to the hustle-bustle of the Big Apple, New York City. Romantic Mancunians love to ponder the similarities between the two cities, the skyline over Hulme, the great canals running through the cities (born from their mutual industrial heritage), the fantastic nightlife. Realistic Mancs know the score - Manchester is fuck-all like New York, but it looks good in print. The band played gigs with local funk-machine ESG, along with a fledgling New Order and a little known support act by the name of Madonna. They filmed the 'Tribeca' film with Michael Shamberg, a film featuring a fantastic gig at Hurrah's, interspersed with footage of the band concocting a percussive beatdown in their loft dwellings. In the middle of this flurry of activity, the band checked into EARS studio, New Jersey, with legendary producer Martin Hannett at the controls. The fruits of these sessions formed ACR's debut studio album, "To Each...", an album on which the impact was single-handedly destroyed by "that idiot hippie" - an in-house engineer at the studio who decided to zero all of Hannett's mix settings before he'd had chance to get the album to tape. The album was eventually remixed and released in January 1981, proceeded by the single, Flight.

Immediately after the release of "To Each...", the band headed back into the studio to record its follow-up, "Sextet". This time the choice of studio was less geographically glamorous - Revolution Studios, in Cheadle Hulme. The album was self-produced, and featured vocals from Martha Tilson, as Simon Topping retreated to the background in the band. By the time of its release in January 1982, "Sextet" was receiving ecstatic reviews from the press. Again, the album was preceded by a single, "Waterline", with the rather dubious catalogue number - Fac 52. Fac 51 was the catalogue number assigned to Factory's world famous superclub, the Hacienda - constructed in a former yacht showroom!

If "Sextet" pointed to more vocal, almost pop tendencies within the ACR artillery, their subsequent album release "I'd Like To See You Again" saw the band march into much deeper territory, based upon stripped down funk and influenced by a more electronic brand of dance music. The emerging club influence is apparent throughout the album, even on the cover where the band are photographed in the Gay Traitor basement bar of the aforementioned Haç. Martha Tilson had left the band prior to the album's recording, and this led the band into a more experimental and instrumental approach. The album received mixed reviews, but it fairs well on more recent airings, this adds to the argument that the band often were ahead of themselves - maybe they were just 'too early'! Pete Terrell, apparently disillusioned by the music industry, left shortly after the albums release. Enter Andy Connell, a mean Rhodes player, whose funky clavi sound would once again lead a change in the sound of the band. A second US tour beckoned during December 1982, on the band's return they received another bombshell - Simon 'Dream' Topping departed, and this was the beginning a dark period for the band.

The band set about writing new material as a quartet, and eventually recruited sax player Tony Quigley as a full-time member (Tony had previously roadied for the band). In June 1985, they returned with their first single in this more permanent line-up, "Wild Party", signalling a brilliant return to form. They set off to tour the States again, with New Order, and the tapes of these gigs provided the mesmerising "ACR Live In America" album.

After their return from America, the band toured the UK extensively. Meanwhile, Factory released "The Old and the New" to capitalise on this new found success. They disappeared into the studio to record their fourth and final Factory studio LP - "Force". The album was undeniably their finest recording yet, all the elements had combined perfectly - the ferociously funky rhythm section was tighter and bolder than ever, the effected guitars soared ever higher, Tony's sax cut like a knife through butter, and the vocals had developed into a real treat - pop melodies backed by additional vocals from Corrine Drewery. ACR had come full-circle, they were a great pop group in the making, and there wasn't much Factory could do to help them anymore. Written by Phil Birchenall
